W&M aspires for data excellence in the administration and in support of teaching, learning, research, community action and university operations.

University Data

The Fact Books are based on census data that is created every fall and spring and is the basis for regulatory reporting by Institutional Research. Research and explore W&M-detailed data in interactive Fact Books. Access is granted to all W&M staff and faculty via the data discovery tool Qlik (pronounced "Click").

Data Self-Service

W&M faculty and staff have access to operational data used to manage the university through the Qlik tool. The data is sourced from Banner and major W&M operational systems. Users can search and filter data to generate an endless variety of result sets to quickly identify trends, anomalies, and aggregations vital to their day-to-day decisions. Qlik Sense supports an assortment of visualizations, including tables, bar charts, pivot tables, line charts, gauges, maps, KPIs, and many more!

A library of governed data exists and continues to evolve and expand. The Qlik App Tracker contains a list of Qlik Apps currently available to members of the W&M user community. Qlik App data is subject to W&M’s Acceptable Use Policy and access to a particular App is governed by Application and Data Steward(s).

Data Governance Advisory Committee (DGAC)

The DGAC oversees activities and investments to improve organizational decision-making and excellence through a laser focus on data fluency, governance and management across the entire university. Our goal is to manage data as an asset in a way that empowers W&M faculty and staff to use data in increasingly effective, efficient and ethical ways.

The W&M Data Team operationalizes data self-service, enables advanced data technologies and capabilities and shares learnings.

Data Standards

A Data Standard clarifies how data should be handled, by whom and with what level of auditing and oversight. The Data Standards generally align with a W&M Policy and are implemented through the local business processes. The documents go through a process of draft, review and approved.

W&M Data Governance Advisory Council (DGAC)

Making sure that data is properly managed.

  • Enable an organization to manage its data as an asset.
  • Define, approve, communicate implement principles,
    policies, procedures, metrics, tools and responsibilities
    for data management.
  • Monitor and guide policy compliance, data usage
    and management activities.
  •  Create a W&M data culture that is highly skilled
    in using data in an ethical manner.
